Caring for our communities and for the Earth is so important for sustainability, and it really makes you feel good, too!

Adopt-A-Highway is an amazing program offered by state Departments of Transportation that provides free services to organizations and businesses that would like a way to care for their local community and receive some amazing signage in exchange for the 2 year commitment to clean the adopted stretch twice per year!

We had a blast this past Saturday as the Heart & Arrow Green Team descended on our 1.3 mile stretch of Rt. 209 outside Kingston, NY. This popular “gateway” to the Hudson Valley is a beautiful stretch of road. We’re stoked to be stewards of this section for at least the next 2 years.

It was seriously gross to see how much plastic, styrofoam, cigarette butts, and all other imaginable forms of garbage had piled up on the roadside over winter, and become tangled in the bushes and vegetation.

I thought to myself, if every citizen were required to do even one hour of local cleanup a month, imagine how much cleaner our communities would be. Furthermore, it would hopefully deter people from littering as mindlessly, knowing that they might soon be the one responsible for cleaning it up.

As required by NYS DOT, we all donned bright orange safety vests and hard hats that sat a good couple inches above our actual heads. We looked hysterical, but hey, safety first, right?

We got a good stretch done in super wet grass and gray conditions. At least the temperature was fairly balmy and we were even sweating by the end. In 2 hours, between 6 people, we managed to fill 10 huge garbage bags with trash.

There is still much more to do, and we look forward to our next group cleanup in a few weeks. Each volunteer receives a bar of Heart & Arrow Handcrafted luxury soap for their efforts. Bringing the idea of “cleanup” full circle.
