3 Simple Tips

For Living a Greener Lifestyle in the New Year

"Change can happen if we all live like we’d like the change.”

-Former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, said in his 2015 talk at the annual Climate Reality Leadership Program in Delhi, India.

Simple in nature, this 12 word quote, if you let it sink in deep enough, becomes quite profound.

Think about it, we talk about wanting and needing change in the world, but how much are we actually doing every day?

Despite common misconceptions, it’s not grand gestures like giving up flying to your favorite holiday destinations, or selling your house to live in a tiny house…

Oh no, it’s much simpler than that.

It all comes down to making small lifestyle changes that can actually bring about the biggest change.  To help you along, here are 3 simple tips to help you live greener; like you’d like the change.

Tip 1: Save the scraps

Use vegetable ‘scraps’ to prepare super healthy broth that you can freeze.

When most people cook their food, they tend to peel their vegetables, and cut off the “undesirable” parts…

Without knowing it, this causes a lot of food to go to waste!

Next time, instead of tossing those end pieces of the onion, carrots, and even the tough bits of kale in the bin, toss them in a freezer bag instead.

Why? To create your very own, tasty veggie broth later! Here’s a recipe you’ve gotta try.

Tip 2: Turn down for what? Climate change!

Choose LED lighting that lasts nearly forever!

Choose LED lighting that lasts nearly forever!

More than a decade ago, Oprah was talking about replacing regular bulbs with energy-saving bulbs and even though LED bulbs have become the norm these days;  according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration up to 10% of household electric bills are lighting!

This time of year especially (Christmas time & winter) it’s easy to see how much energy goes into lighting.

Christmas lights sure do look pretty, but is there really a reason for them to stay on all night?

When you’re not at home, be sure to turn down for climate change.

Pro tip: invest in bulbs that last decades!

Try using white vinegar for your cleaning needs, and biodegradable detergents rather than chemical cleaners.

Tip 3: Remove toxins from your home

Everyday we spray, wash, and scrub with products that end up swirling down the drain.

Once a liquid goes down the drain it can be easy to forget about it… but remember, what ends up in the drain, ends up in our rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Research has even shown that cleaning products are responsible for causing urban pollution!

Pay close attention to especially harmful toxins like chlorine, and ammonia in products you use. Instead opt for healthier, baking soda and vinegar based options for cleaning.

So there you have it, 3 incredibly simple ways you can start to live a greener lifestyle in the new year (if not today!). Do you have any more tips to share with us? Leave your suggestions in the comments below.
